Premier League Sides on Alert as German Midfield Prodigy Turns Down Schalke 04 Contract Extension
The news that Schalke 04 attacking midfielder Max Meyer has turned down a contract extension with the Bundesliga side has sparked renewed interest from English Premier League sides, ahead of the summer transfer window.
According to reports from Bild, the German international has rejected an offer from Die Königsblauen to commit his future to the club. As it stands, Meyer's will be in the last year of his contract next season. The midfielder admitted:"I got an offer for the extension, but decided with my management not to accept it".The news will come as a great disappointment to the east German side, who lost Joel Matip to Liverpool on a free transfer in similar circumstances last summer. The Bundesliga team finished tenth in last season's disappointing campaign, and will be determined not to let the German international leave for nothing.Despite his reputation as a gifted young talent, Meyer has had a poor season for Schalke. This has not been helped by a series of ankle problems, which have plagued the player throughout the campaign. A return of just one goal and one assist in 27 league appearances pales in comparison to the performances of his teammates Sead Kolasinac and Allesandro Schöph.
The young midfielder is still undoubtably an excellent prospect, and possesses dribbling skills that would demand the attention of any manager keen on playing attractive football. Arsenal , Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool have been heavily linked with the player, and may well up their pursuit in light of the information that he could be available for a cut-price, due to his contractual issues.
chalke had previously valued the player at around £45million, a figure which put off a number of high-profile sides last summer. However, it is now believed that the star could be available for less than half of the original asking price. Both Liverpool and Spurs are keen to bolster their attacking options ahead of next season, and Meyer would be an exciting signing for either side.
